With increasingly sophisticated and widespread cyberattacks in the news, what role must higher education play in developing the future cyber workforce?Located at the center of federal cybersecurity assets, the city of Augusta is already growing into a global cyber hub. Now, a new school at Augusta University will prepare the next generation of cyber professionals — right here in Augusta.Augusta University President Brooks Keel announced a new School for Computer and Cyber Sciences that will provide opportunities for students to work with the state cybersecurity professionals. The announcement comes just days after breaking ground on a new state-owned 168,000-square-foot, $60 million cyber innovation and training center at Augusta University's Riverfront Campus."With hands-on research and internship opportunities not found anywhere else, we have the opportunity to revolutionize cybersecurity education in Georgia and make Augusta a leading hub for cybersecurity innovation," Keel said of the new statewide effort, dedicated to develop the workforce and infrastructure needed to protect our nation from cyberthreats.Augusta University's new school launches July 1, but will move into the Hull McKnight Georgia Cyber Innovation and Training Center upon completion in 2018. "The school will benefit more than 300 current computer science and information technology students, who will have the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with industry, the departments of industry and defense, and state cybersecurity professionals and tech startups," Keel said.How else is Augusta University responding to the need to develop highly skilled, technical workers? Biography

Brooks A. Keel, PhD, was named President of Augusta University on July 8, 2015. Keel earned both his graduate and undergraduate degrees from two of Augusta University’s founding universities: a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from Augusta College in 1978 and a doctorate in reproductive endocrinology from the Medical College of Georgia in 1982. After completing postdoctoral work at the University of Texas Health Science Center and the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, Keel spent 20 years as a professor and researcher before moving into administration.

Immediately prior to his arrival at Augusta University, Keel served as the 12th President of Georgia Southern University (2010-’15), where he led a student-centric administration and cemented his reputation as an accessible and engaged leader who genuinely enjoys interacting with students and faculty.

Prior to that, Keel served in the top ranks of academia, research and economic development in successive appointments at Louisiana State University, where he was Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development; the University of Kansas–Wichita and Florida State University.

During years as a basic science and clinical researcher, Keel served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on externally funded grants and contracts totaling more than $26 million. He is the author of 65 peer-reviewed scientific publications, 78 peer-reviewed abstracts and 19 book chapters; and he edited four books in the area of reproductive medicine and biology.

He is a member of the Society for the Study of Reproduction, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and the Society for Gynecologic Investigation, among others. Keel has served on numerous boards, including the American Board of Bioanalysis, the American Association of Bioanalysts Board of Registry, the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, the Southeastern Universities Research Association, and the Executive Committee of the Council on Research Policy and Graduate Education of APLU.

Keel is married to First Lady Tammie Schalue, PhD, an accomplished scientist and scholar. Both are certified scuba diving instructors.

He discussed continued aspirations going forward as growth continues within the university.

These include the expansion of the Medical College of Georgia, the addition of the School of Public Health and the new programs that have been approved for the upcoming year.

Brooks Keel formally becomes Augusta University president

Dr. Brooks A. Keel received a prolonged standing ovation Wednesday during his formal investiture as president of Augusta University.

Keel is technically the first president of the university, which was renamed last year from Georgia Regents University, which was formed by a merger of Georgia Health Sciences and Augusta State universities in 2012. Dating back to its roots in 1828 as Medical Academy of Georgia, which later became Medical College of Georgia and is still the name of the university’s medical school, Keel reflected on both the heritage and the unique newness of the institution.
